Antheia (An-th-ee-aa) – Her name is derived from an Ancient Greek word meaning “blossom” or “flower”. She was especially worshiped in the Spring or near the marshes and lowlands. She was one of the Charites, or Graces of Greek mythology. She was often depicted on vases as an attendant of Aphrodite.
Antheia was very quiet to everyone except for Iris. She was often misunderstood as a helpless and gentle being who didn’t know how to defend herself, but Iris knew better. She was actually a defensive and active friend who was extremely loyal and loving. She would help anyone in need. She always kept her promises, and she was always very smiley and a bit mischievous. She was one of the kinder goddesses.
In ancient Greece, Arretophoria – the festival of trust and friendship, was held at some point between June and July. Each year, two maidens were given a special honey-laden diet and clothed in golden robes to take on a special trust. They delivered a package untouched to a secret place in a local temple, then they spent the year in community service, never peeking inside the box. This sounds like a fun activity for couples or friends. Each person picks out a trust gift for the other and gives it to them to put ina special place. The enitre time the gift remains there unopened, Antheia will energize it and bless the people in that relationship, so they don’t get tempted to peek. At the end of the year, they donned gold and burned myrrh to create a sacred space in which Antheia could dwell. There they would finally open up all the gifts.
Antheia’s center of worship was on the island of Crete. She also had a temple in Argos. Along with being one of the Graces, she was also apart of the Horea. The Horea was a group of gods and godesses of seasons.
Antheia was a influence to Greek culture in two ways. The first would be, she always wore flowery wreaths where ever she went and so the people of Greece also wore them as a sign of respect.
The second would be, over half of greek gods and goddesses were very prideful and Antheia was very humble. She made everything about the people of Greece. She made the people of Greece have hope and peace and made them feel good about themselves, unlike the other gods.
